Jean-Claude
Demeure
Painter, printmaker and maker of artist’s books, working in Bavay, in the far north of France. Gardens, orchards, hedgerows and the patterns of old textiles, in oil, linocut and drawing.
Recent series
All workThree practices
A motif often reappears across all three: in oil, in a linocut, and in the pages of a book.
Painting
Oils on canvas and wood, some on a very large scale, often built up with collage and printed paper.
Printmaking
Color linocuts and woodcuts, cut and printed in his own studio in very small editions.
Artist’s books
Handmade books that pair a text, from Persian poetry to Mallarmé, with original prints.
The artist
Trained first in science, then in art, Demeure has painted, printed and made books for more than forty years. Today he teaches painting at the École supérieure d’art Dunkerque-Tourcoing. A specialist in Matisse, Demeure has led workshops and talks at the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, the painter’s birthplace.
About the artist
The studio
Demeure works from the house he shares with the artist Kti Vandamme in Bavay. Together they run the Atelier Reine Brunehaut, a small print workshop with presses and cases of lead type, where their books are made.
